10 Winter Destinations Near Athens for a Weekend Getaway

Winter is the perfect season for mountain getaways in idyllic landscapes, which, with good company, can become the best source of memories during the cold days of the year. Starting from Athens, we have listed winter destinations that are located close to the capital. As the term “close” can be somewhat subjective, we made sure to cover all interpretations of the word.

Kalavryta

The beauty of Kalavryta is literally timeless, but winter is the season that will always make you want to go back. In Kalavryta, there is something for every taste. Whether you prefer to just relax or want to experience an action-packed weekend, the area has it all: for those who prefer relaxation, the taverns on the central square are waiting with authentic Greek food, and for those seeking more action, the ski resort and the cog railway will undoubtedly top your list of activities.
A stop at the historical monuments of the 1943 Holocaust is a must (the museum is housed in the old elementary school in the village center).

Nafpaktia

Traditional villages, welcoming stone-built guesthouses, nature trails, Greek flavors, and landscapes that enchant you. These are five key reasons to add Mountainous Nafpaktia to your travel list.
Nestled between the Pindus and Vardoussia mountains, Nafpaktia offers countless thrills for all types of visitors! From the picturesque rooftops of the houses in Ano Chora that create a picture-perfect landscape, to the small bus that, until the 1980s, operated on the Nafpaktos-Ano Chora-Kato Chora route and is now a tourist attraction.
If you love mountaineering, the peak of Tsakalaki will impress you.  Alternatively, if you prefer adventure on two wheels, enjoy an epic bike trail through fir trees.
Be sure to block your calendar for a 3-4 hour rafting trip on the Evinos River, which flows through the area and is perfect for beginners.

Corinth / Orini Corinthia

Much can be said about Corinth, as it is a region with a rich historical imprint in the country. The beauty of Orini Corinthia has also been renowned throughout the years, and rightly so.
With Trikala being the most popular destination, a getaway to Orini Corinthia will undoubtedly fill you with tranquility, serenity, and fresh air. Gkoura, Karya, Kastania, Kryoneri, Stymfalia, and Feneos are just a few of the villages you must visit.
As for the activities, snow buggy rides and trekking on the trails of Ziria should be on your weekend must-do list— thank us later.

Stemnitsa – Dimitsana

An ideal option for ultimate isolation and a break from the daily hustle of city life. These two villages offer endless relaxation opportunities—you’ll have the chance to enjoy hot coffee in the village square’s cafés and sample local specialties at the taverns. If you happen to visit during the snow season, the landscape will provide the perfect setting for a love story—make the most of it.
Stemnitsa and Dimitsana are often chosen by visitors seeking to unwind for a weekend, but if you’re looking for a more intense experience, the Menalon Trail is perfect for you, offering hiking paths for all levels of difficulty, with one common feature: the trail will make you feel one with nature.

Nafplio – Mycenae

One might expect Nafplio to be on the summer destination list, but honestly, it is stunning in winter as well, with mild weather and fewer crowds, making it perfect for a getaway “away from the spotlight.”
The highlights of a winter visit to Nafplio include walking through even the picturesque alleys and streets without the crowds, as well as excursions to nearby mountain villages where the scent of the fireplace sets the right mood from the moment you step out of your car. The Bourtzi fortress is the highlight of the town, and in winter, it looks like a scene from a movie, “wrapped” in a veil of mist.
The same holds true for Mycenae, the legendary city of Agamemnon. In winter, the site is less crowded, providing the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the history behind the renowned Mycenaean civilization.

Plastira Lake

In this case, the distance from Athens is slightly longer, but if miles are just a number to you, pack your bags. The landscape of the lake is breathtaking, especially in winter, and you will surely find many reasons to capture moments for your photo library.
Be sure to visit the 220-meter-wide dam on the southern part of the lake. At the dam, you’ll find small shops selling local products such as honey and preserves.
A short distance from the dam, you can also visit the Pelekitis Monastery, an impressive stone-built church, and the Botanical Garden, which is worth visiting to see rare species of local flora and fauna.
Naturally, at the lake, you will find a variety of activities, such as horseback riding, canoeing, pedal boating, etc. Choose the one that suits you and discover the beauty of the lake in a creative way.

Karpenisi

An all-time classic choice for winter enthusiasts. Historically, the town’s name derives from the Vlach word “cârpinisi,” meaning a place with many hornbeams or false plane trees. These are the trees you’ll encounter when you reach the town’s central square—a sight you’ll remember forever.
The surrounding villages are definitely worth a visit, with Megalo Chorio being the most popular among visitors to Evrytania. Also, visit Kefalovryso and Krikello, from where you can access the Panta Vrehei Gorge, the famous gorge with waterfalls that flow year-round, creating the illusion that it’s always raining.
You can’t leave Karpenisi without visiting the famous Kremaston Lake, the largest artificial lake in Greece. The area is also renowned for its folklore, so a visit to one of the Folklore Museums in the villages will be a rewarding experience.

Pelion

One can never say enough good things about this area. Pelion boasts unmatched natural beauty, and no matter how many times you visit, you will always discover something new.
Whether you choose one of the more popular villages, such as Milies or Tsagarada, or a more remote one like Vizitsa, the winter landscape—with its stone houses and tiled roofs—will captivate you, offering the perfect pause from the daily grind. The food is guaranteed to be a delight wherever you choose to dine, but be prepared for winding and steep roads, as the journey to this destination is part of the experience!
During winter, the Agriolefkes Ski Center is open, inviting you to enjoy winter sports in a completely organized setting surrounded by a snowy landscape. Hiking trails and horseback riding are among the activities that you will remember for a long time.

Amfikleia – Parnassus

Amfikleia is one of the quieter winter destinations, and due to its location at the foot of Mount Parnassus, it has become a popular spot for mountain lovers thanks to its natural beauty, neoclassical mansions, and cobblestone streets.
A stroll through the preserved village will convince you that you made the right choice, and at the Monastery of Dadi, the Ancient Acropolis of Amfikleia, and the Komopili Bridge, your eyes will be filled with beauty and views.
Tip: Try the Mountain Bike experience—it’s unforgettable.

Zarouchla

Zarouchla is one of the most enchanting winter destinations near Athens. Located in the heart of Achaia at an altitude of 1,100 meters, it offers a unique experience. With traditional stone houses, narrow streets, and stunning views of the surrounding mountains, Zarouchla is an ideal destination for those seeking rest and exploration.
The area is known for its authentic Greek hospitality and features traditional tavernas where you can taste local delicacies. For nature lovers, Zarouchla offers unique opportunities for hiking.
